The story

Chhattisgarh holds steady

What happened

Bharatiya Janata Party held on to power in Chhattisgarh, turning back a challenge that fell just short.

The BJP won 50 of the 90 seats.

That was comfortably above the 46-seat majority mark.

On vote share — the slice of all ballots cast that went to one party or candidate — the Indian National Congress trailed closely, 38.6% to 40.3%.

What changed

Rather than a change of government, this election was notable for how little changed.

The BJP returned with exactly the 50 seats it had won last time — an identical result.

Turnout — the share of registered voters who actually cast a ballot — slipped only slightly, moving by -0.7 pp to 70.6%.

Notable numbers

A few numbers from that election stand out.

The tightest race was in Antagarh, Chhattisgarh, decided by a margin — how far ahead the winner finished, in votes, over whoever came second — of just 109 votes.

At the other extreme, Marwahi, Chhattisgarh was the most lopsided contest, with the winner ahead by 34.9% of the vote.

The lowest turnout anywhere was in Bijapur, Chhattisgarh, at just 29.2%.

The most crowded ballot was in Bhatgaon, Chhattisgarh, where 29 candidates stood.

The backdrop

This was still a young state, not far removed from its very first general election.
