The story

A new party's Council landslide

What happened

A newly formed party won overwhelmingly in Delhi's Metropolitan Council election, replacing the party that had long led it.

The Janata Party won 46 of the 56 seats on offer, a landslide result.

Its nearest rival, the Indian National Congress, fell to just 10 seats — well down from its previous term.

What changed

The party that won this election hadn't existed at Delhi's previous poll.

It went from 0 seats to 46, its best-ever tally in the city to that point.

Turnout — the share of registered voters who actually cast a ballot — fell by -13.5 pp percentage points from the previous election.

Notable numbers

A few numbers from that election stand out.

The closest race was in Dev Nagar, Delhi, decided by a margin — how far ahead the winner finished, in votes, over whoever came second — of just 237.

At the other extreme, R.K. Puram, Delhi was won by 47.3% of the vote.

The largest electorate was in Najafgarh, Delhi, where 1,09,358 people were registered to vote.

The most crowded contest was in Narela, Delhi, where 8 candidates stood for a single seat.

The backdrop

This election was still fought under the Council's limited, advisory powers, with a Lieutenant Governor holding final authority over Delhi's administration.
