The story

A landslide, and a first change of power

What happened

A new party swept into power in this assembly election, easily crossing the halfway mark on its own.

The Indian National Congress (Urs) won 20 of the 30 seats — a landslide, well past the 16-seat majority mark.

Its nearest rival, the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak, won just 7 seats.

What changed

The previous election had produced no outright winner; this one went the other way entirely.

The MAG, which had won the most seats last time, saw its own tally collapse to just 7 seats.

Turnout also climbed: about 67.2% of registered voters — the share who actually cast a ballot — turned out this time, +5.0 pp more than before.

Notable numbers

A few numbers from that election stand out.

The tightest race was Mandrem, Goa, decided by a margin — how far ahead the winner finished, in votes, over whoever came second — of just 402 votes.

Benaulim, Goa had the widest margin of the night, with the winner ahead by 56.9% of the vote — measured as a share of the vote rather than in votes.

Bicholim, Goa posted the best turnout of any seat, at 80.5%.

Despite winning so many more seats, the INC(U)'s 38.4% vote share — the slice of all ballots cast that went to one party or candidate — was barely ahead of the MAG's 36.4%.

The backdrop

This was also the first change of government the territory's short electoral history had seen.
