Congress's third straight win
What happened
Indian National Congress kept its hold on Gujarat easily, extending a run of wins that stretched back to the state's earliest elections.
It won 140 of the 168 seats on offer.
That was a vote share of 50.9% — the slice of all ballots cast that went to one party or candidate.
The nearest rival, the Indian National Congress (Organisation), took just 16 seats.
What changed
The clearest shift in the results was seats moving away from the party's old rival.
50 seats moved from the Swatantra Party to the INC — the largest shift between any two parties that year.
The SWA's own seat count collapsed.
Notable numbers
A few numbers from the results stand out.
The tightest race was Limkheda, Gujarat, decided by a margin — how far ahead the winner finished, in votes, over whoever came second — of just 85 votes.
At the other extreme, Devgadh Baria, Gujarat saw the widest win of the night, with the winner ahead by 84.6% of the vote.
Turnout — the share of registered voters who actually cast a ballot — peaked in Daskroi, Gujarat, reaching 74.5%.
Ellisbridge, Gujarat had the largest electorate of any seat that year, with 1,15,499 people on the rolls.
