Congress wins a second term
What happened
Indian National Congress won a second term in a landslide, extending its hold on the state assembly.
The INC won 34 of the 40 seats.
The Mizo National Front trailed far behind with just 5.
It was the party's best showing yet in the state.
What changed
The share of registered voters who actually turned out to cast a ballot also reached a level never matched before or since.
It hit 83.0% that year.
This was also the first Mizoram election to offer NOTA — "None of the Above" — a ballot option letting voters formally reject every candidate on offer.
3,810 voters chose it, about 0.7% of the total that year.
Notable numbers
A few more numbers stand out from that election.
The tightest finish: Tuikum, Mizoram was decided by just 14 votes — the narrowest margin, how far ahead the winner finished, in votes, over whoever came second, anywhere in the state that year.
At the other extreme, Tuichawng, Mizoram was won by a margin of 41.4% of the vote.
Turnout was lowest in Aizawl North - I, Mizoram, at 79.1%.
Even the most contested seat, Hachhek, Mizoram, drew only 5 candidates, against a statewide average of 3.5 per seat.
The backdrop
The result underlined how concentrated Mizoram's assembly politics had become.
