Odisha's first-ever assembly election produced a hung house — a result where no single party wins enough seats to govern alone.

The Indian National Congress led with 67 of the 140 seats.

It polled 37.9% of the vote share — the slice of all ballots cast that went to one party or candidate.

The Ganatantra Parishad followed with 31 seats.

This was also the very first election held on Odisha's own constituency map as a state assembly.

Some of that year's constituencies used a multi-member design, where a single contest sent more than one MLA to the assembly.

33 of the 107 constituencies worked this way.

A few numbers from that first election stand out.

The closest race was in Panchpir, Odisha, decided by just 104 votes — the margin, how far ahead the winner finished, in votes, over whoever came second.

Bisra, Odisha recorded the best turnout of the election, at 68.2% — turnout being the share of registered voters who actually cast a ballot.

Bhawanipatna, Odisha was the state's biggest constituency by registered voters, with 1,35,159 names on the electoral roll.

Statewide, 34.7% of registered voters cast a ballot.

Turnout figures for 1 constituency could not be included in that statewide figure.

This was Odisha's very first election under its own assembly, so there was no earlier result anywhere in the state to compare it against.

The runner-up that year drew its strength from a coalition of former princely-state rulers.
