One party won a landslide in Punjab's first-ever assembly election.

The Indian National Congress took 96 of the 126 seats on offer.

Its nearest rival, the Shiromani Akali Dal, won only 13 seats.

Even so, its vote share — the slice of all ballots cast that went to one party or candidate — was just 36.7%.

This was the first Vidhan Sabha election held in Punjab.

Some of Punjab's constituencies used a multi-member design, sending more than one member from a single contest.

21 of the 105 constituencies worked this way.

Altogether, the results filled all 126 seats, giving the winning party 32 more seats than it needed to govern alone.

A few individual results from that count stand out.

The closest race was Serah, Punjab, decided by a margin — how far ahead the winner finished, in votes, over whoever came second — of just 67 votes.

The widest margin in percentage terms came in Nurpur, Punjab, where the winner finished 51.7% ahead of the runner-up.

Adampur, Punjab recorded the highest turnout — the share of registered voters who actually cast a ballot — of the election, at 94.1%.

The most crowded contest was Gharhshankar, Punjab, where 20 candidates stood for a single seat.

This was Punjab's first assembly election under India's new constitution, in the earliest years of independent India's party politics.
