The story

Uttar Pradesh's first assembly

What happened

Uttar Pradesh's first election to its own state assembly ended in a landslide for one party.

The Indian National Congress won 390 of the 430 seats.

That was 90.7% of the assembly — well past the 216-seat majority mark.

Its vote share — the slice of all ballots cast that went to one party or candidate — was a comparatively modest 47.9%.

What changed

This was Uttar Pradesh's first election to its own state assembly, held on the boundaries the state started out with.

It used 347 constituencies to fill 430 seats.

Some of those constituencies elected more than one member each, a multi-member design used that year.

83 worked that way.

On average, 7.5 candidates contested each constituency.

Notable numbers

A few numbers from that election stand out.

The closest race: Bikapur East, Uttar Pradesh was decided by just 1 vote — the narrowest margin, how far ahead the winner finished, in votes, over whoever came second, of any seat that year.

At the other extreme, Domariaganj South, Uttar Pradesh was won by the widest margin of any seat, at 68.8% of the vote.

Kairana South, Uttar Pradesh recorded the highest turnout — the share of registered voters who actually cast a ballot — of any seat that year, at 65.9%.

Lkhimpur South, Uttar Pradesh had the largest electorate of any seat, with 1,83,301 registered voters.

The backdrop

The assembly also seated a wide scatter of smaller parties and independents beyond the landslide.

8 parties won at least one seat, alongside 14 independents.
