What happened
Uttar Pradesh's ruling party kept its winning streak alive, though its share of seats slipped from before.
The Indian National Congress won 249 seats, its 3rd win in a row.
Its vote share — the slice of all ballots cast that went to one party or candidate — was 36.3%.
The All India Bhartiya Jan Sangh was now the leading opposition, with 49 seats.
What changed
This was the first Uttar Pradesh election in which every constituency elected just one member.
The assembly filled 430 seats from 430 constituencies — one seat each.
Turnout — the share of registered voters who actually cast a ballot — also moved, by +2.1 pp from the previous election.
Notable numbers
A few numbers from that election stand out.
The closest race: Deogaon, Uttar Pradesh was decided by just 8 votes — the narrowest margin, how far ahead the winner finished, in votes, over whoever came second, of any seat that year.
At the other extreme, Ranikhet South, Uttar Pradesh was won by the widest margin of any seat, at 72.3% of the vote.
Firozabad, Uttar Pradesh drew the most candidates of any seat that year, 17 in total.
Kanpur City I I, Uttar Pradesh had the largest electorate of any seat, with 1,23,845 registered voters.
The backdrop
A handful of smaller parties broke through for the first time at this election.
