What happened
Indian National Congress lost power in Uttar Pradesh in a landslide, defeated by a newly formed opposition party.
The Janata Party won 352 of the 425 seats on offer.
That was 139 seats more than it needed for a majority.
Its nearest rival, the INC, won only 47 seats — a collapse from the party that had governed before.
What changed
This was also the first election held on Uttar Pradesh's new assembly boundaries.
Those boundaries came from a delimitation, the official redrawing of constituency boundaries that happens every so often as India's population shifts.
The party that won had not existed at Uttar Pradesh's previous election, going from 0 seats to 352.
Notable numbers
A few numbers from the results stand on their own.
The closest race: Mussoorie, Uttar Pradesh was decided by a margin of just 42 votes — how far ahead the winner finished, in votes, over whoever came second.
At the other extreme, Chhaprauli, Uttar Pradesh saw the widest margin of the election, with the winner ahead by 68.5% of the vote.
Turnout — the share of registered voters who actually cast a ballot — peaked in Garoutha, Uttar Pradesh, at 69.4%.
Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh drew the largest field of the election, with 20 candidates on the ballot.
The backdrop
This election followed a period of Emergency rule and press censorship across the country.
Held in June 1977, shortly after the national Emergency ended, this assembly election saw the newly formed Janata Party win 352 of Uttar Pradesh's 425 seats. The Indian National Congress, which had won every UP assembly election since the state's first in 1951, fell to 47 seats and lost power for the first time since independence.
