A new coalition took power in West Bengal, ending the government that had run the state before.

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) won 178 of the 294 seats on its own — a landslide result.

Its closest rival was the Janata Party, winning seats in the state for the first time and taking 29 seats.

This was also the first election held under new assembly boundaries.

The change followed delimitation — the official redrawing of constituency boundaries, which happens every so often as India's population shifts.

The assembly grew from 280 seats to 294.

The party that won hadn't held power before, going from 14 seats to 178.

A few numbers from this election stand out.

The tightest finish was Bagdaha, West Bengal, decided by a margin — how far ahead the winner finished, in votes, over whoever came second — of just 83 votes.

At the other end, Satgachia, West Bengal was the most one-sided race of the year, won by 67.4% of the vote over the runner-up.

Turnout — the share of registered voters who actually cast a ballot — peaked in Bankura, West Bengal, at 85.2%.

The largest electorate belonged to Siliguri, West Bengal, with 1,52,071 registered voters.

The coalition that won this election had not governed before.

It became known as the Left Front.
